My great grandmother, as her mother before her, knitted every moment she got. All week long she would sit on a chair in her son's kitchen and knit and felt warm mittens and socks for Icelandic sailors.
In every thread of wool she knitted from, a wish for a safe return was added.
On sundays she would not knit for the sailors, she believed that would bring them bad luck at sea.
On sundays she knitted her most beautiful pieces of art, delicate rose patterned mittens, shoe inserts, baby wear and fine clothing.
It is in honor of her that I open this shop.

It was by an old pair of rose patterned shoe inserts that I was inspired to set up this shop. In Iceland during the time of my great grandmother people wore shoes made from sheep skin or fish skin. To insulate the foot from the ground inserts were knitted and placed inside the shoes.
When time past and the soles of the shoes were made thicker these inserts were nolonger needed and the tradition to make them became a dying art.

Knitting a shoe insert was a true labor of love. They were usually multi-colored and carefully patterned made with short strings of leftover yarn. Often shoe inserts were given as a token of affection by young women. The reciever would feel his soft shoe inserts in every step and enjoy the beautiful design but to all others they would be hidden in his shoes.
