I am a part-time knitwear designer impassioned by the numerous creative opportunities that come through knitted fabric.
The knitwear story started long time ago, when a friend made me my first customer-made sweater on her old knitting machine. The design story started a bit later, when after the whole day dedicated to clothes shopping I ended up with empty hands. I just could not find what I wanted – something special, with character, even daring… but not boring. As with many of my stories, these two became one…
Having worked in marketing for big multinational companies over 10 years I knew, that only the ignorant can come up with new ideas: he just does not know that everything has already been invented. So I’ve only learned the knitting skill leaving all the design knowledge to others. And now it’s me who has a machine at home to make my own design prototypes. I took a knitwear design class with one of the top fashion textile design companies - Knit-1, selling designs to the industry at all levels of the market. The combination of acquired technical skills and understanding fashion customer needs allowed me to sell a student work to one of Knit-1 clients, UK high-street chain TopShop.
In my knitwear design experiments I aim to cooperate with industrial partners like commercial brands, other designers and design studios, yarn manufacturers for all sorts of commercial and art projects.
I also continue experimenting with final garments, some of which I occasionally sell online at www.wim-merlin.com.
